2025 Jeep Grand Cherokee Roof Rack: Crossbar Position and Load

For the 2025 Jeep Grand Cherokee roof-luggage rack described in the US-market Owner’s Manual, the rear crossbar can be moved between two positions to suit the secured load. The manual gives a maximum rack load of 150 lb (68 kg), distributed evenly over the crossbars. Use these instructions only if your vehicle has the same manual-described rack; they do not confirm that a particular aftermarket rack fits.

Position the rear crossbar

The manual describes the front crossbar in its forward position and gives two choices for the rear crossbar. Choose the rear position that suits the load you will secure, while keeping the crossbar parallel with the rack frame. The diagram shows the relationship only; use the supplied crossbars and the vehicle’s own hardware, not the drawing as a measurement or template.

For the rear crossbar adjustment described by Jeep:

  1. Loosen the crossbar attachments at its upper edge about eight turns with the wrench supplied with the Mopar crossbars.
  2. Move the rear crossbar to the selected rear position, keeping it parallel with the rack frame.
  3. Retighten it with that wrench to lock it in position.

This sequence applies to the crossbars described in the manual. If your rack differs, its own current installation instructions control. Do not force a crossbar into a position or use improvised hardware when the attachment points or locking method do not match.

Secure and distribute the load

Jeep states a maximum load of 150 lb (68 kg), distributed uniformly over the crossbars. Treat this as the manual’s rack-load limit, not as permission to exceed any lower vehicle, rack, or accessory limit. The rack’s stated capacity also does not increase the vehicle’s total load capacity. Include the rack and cargo as the applicable vehicle and product instructions require, and check the vehicle’s gross and axle loading information as well.

Cargo secured across two crossbars with the load distributed evenly

Secure the cargo so it cannot shift, and follow the instructions supplied with the rack and the item being carried. Do not assume that moving the rear bar changes the rated capacity or allows a concentrated load. If the load cannot be secured within the system’s instructions, do not carry it on this rack.

The manual also warns that cargo or metal placed over the satellite-radio antenna may interrupt satellite-radio reception when the vehicle is equipped with that antenna. Keep that location in mind when arranging cargo, while still following the rack and cargo maker’s placement and securement instructions.

Confirm the equipment before loading

The manual’s procedure is for the described 2025 Grand Cherokee rack and Mopar crossbars. Confirm that the rack on your vehicle is the same system and that its bars and mounting hardware match the manual. A model year alone does not identify installed equipment or establish an aftermarket part fit.

Before travel, check the current vehicle and rack instructions for the exact setup, including any limits that apply to the bars, carrier, cargo, or total vehicle load. If a part, position, or rating is unclear, ask a Jeep dealer or rack manufacturer to identify it. Do not apply this 2025 manual’s procedure or limit to another Grand Cherokee year, trim, market, rack generation, or accessory without a matching source.
