Adjusting the Roof Crossbars on a 2010 Mazda Tribute
The 2010 Mazda Tribute owner’s manual describes adjustable crossbars for vehicles equipped with the roof-rack system. The bars slide along the side rails, but the manual’s instructions apply to this vehicle and its specified system. They are not instructions for another Mazda model or an aftermarket rack that only looks similar.
Adjust an equipped crossbar
With the vehicle stopped and the roof area clear, use the manual’s sequence for the bar you are moving:
- Loosen the thumbwheel at both ends of the crossbar.
- Slide the crossbar to the desired position on the side rails.
- Tighten the thumbwheel at both ends.
The manual says both crossbars are adjustable. It does not provide a universal spacing for carrying every accessory. Use the current instructions for the box, bike carrier, kayak carrier, or other equipment to set bar spacing and check clearances. If a carrier requires a measurement or position that cannot be confirmed on the installed rack, do not improvise; ask Mazda or a qualified fitter.
Keep loads on the bars and within the vehicle guidance
Mazda says not to place loads directly on the roof panel. Loads belong on crossbars attached to the roof side rails. The manual recommends Mazda Genuine Accessory crossbars designed for this vehicle when suitable factory crossbars are not fitted.
For the 2010 Tribute, the manual gives a maximum recommended load of 100 lb (45 kg), evenly distributed on the crossbars. Treat that number as a vehicle-specific manual limit, not a crossbar product rating or a cargo allowance for another vehicle. Check the rack and accessory instructions too; the lower applicable limit controls. Follow the makers’ definitions for whether the rack and carrier weight count toward the vehicle’s roof-load figure.
Before each trip, secure the load and check the thumbwheels. The manual says to recheck tightness whenever a load is added or removed and periodically while traveling, including at fuel stops. It also warns that a loaded vehicle can handle differently and recommends an evenly distributed load with a low center of gravity. Carrying equipment high on the vehicle calls for extra care and a driving speed appropriate to the conditions.
When the crossbars are installed but unloaded, the manual gives a separate position intended to reduce noise: place the forward bar 2.5 in (63.5 mm) rearward of the center of the roof-rail system and the second bar 2.5 in (63.5 mm) from the forward bar. This is an unloaded-bar noise note, not a spacing instruction for carrying a particular accessory. Use the carrier’s own spacing instructions when the bars are loaded.
If a crossbar, thumbwheel, or side rail is damaged or will not tighten securely, do not carry a load until the rack is inspected. For general measurements and mounting interfaces, see crossbar geometry; for help identifying a vehicle’s roof attachment path, see roof types and base-rack components.
