Roof Rack for a Tesla Model Y Glass Roof: Approval and Placement Checks
Tesla’s Model Y uses a glass roof, but a product description alone does not answer whether a specific rack fits a particular vehicle. Tesla’s owner’s manual sets the approval boundary; the matching rack instructions and the vehicle’s own load information complete the check.

Start with Tesla’s approved system
Tesla’s current US Model Y manual says to use only Tesla-approved roof racks with a Tesla mounting accessory. It warns that an unapproved system can cause significant vehicle damage. The UK manual gives the same approval direction. Confirm the manual and parts listing for your market, model year, production configuration, and exact rack before ordering. A T-slot that accepts an attachment does not establish that every attachment is approved for the vehicle.
Tesla’s Canada shop currently lists its Model Y roof rack with a 165 lb load rating and excludes Model Y L. The UK shop listing shows a 75 kg product rating and describes compatibility with Model Y vehicles. These are product page statements. The rating is not a vehicle roof limit or a cargo-only allowance, and market-specific product listings should not be merged into a single fitment promise. Check the current local listing and the exact vehicle manual.
What the 2025+ installation procedure specifies
Tesla’s 2025+ Service Manual procedure applies to the named Model Y service manual scope and includes a Model Y Standard note added in July 2026. It calls for cleaning the installation points with isopropyl alcohol and allowing them to dry for one minute. It then aligns anti-abrasion tape with the glass markings: 227 mm back from the front edge of the glass roof and 412 mm forward from the rear edge. The procedure describes engaging the clips under the glass, using the correct pads and bars, tightening the wingnuts evenly, and torquing them to 3.5 Nm (2.6 lb-ft). It warns against overtightening to avoid damaging the glass, then calls for locking the bars and pushing and pulling them to confirm they are secure.

Use the full current Tesla procedure and the instructions supplied with the exact rack kit. The measurements, clips, torque, and sequence are specific to that procedure. Do not transfer them to another Tesla model, another rack, or an aftermarket mounting system.
Check the vehicle’s load information separately
The Model Y manual identifies vehicle-capacity and certification labels and explains how to calculate available cargo and luggage capacity from the occupants and the placard. It also warns not to exceed the vehicle’s gross vehicle or axle ratings. The cited roof-rack section does not give one universal Model Y roof-load figure. Use the labels and current manual for the actual vehicle, then follow the rack and attachment instructions for their own limits and load accounting.
Do not treat the rack’s 165 lb or 75 kg product rating as permission to place that amount of cargo on every Model Y. The rack, attachments, cargo, vehicle capacity, and any configuration-specific restrictions must all be resolved for the installed setup.
Before buying or driving
- Match the vehicle’s market, model year, trim, and production configuration to the current local Tesla manual and rack listing.
- Confirm that the rack and Tesla mounting accessory are approved for that vehicle. Check exclusions such as the Canadian listing’s Model Y L note.
- Use the complete Tesla installation procedure for the applicable vehicle and rack revision, including glass protection and the final pull check.
- Check the vehicle labels and every rack or carrier limit; do not substitute a product rating for the vehicle’s permitted load.
- Recheck current product availability and instructions before purchase.
If the exact vehicle, accessory, or load relationship is not established, pause and confirm it with Tesla. The approval and glass placement path is specific to the Model Y and the exact system being installed.
