Land Rover Discovery Versatile Roof Rack: Installation Branches and Limits
Jaguar Land Rover’s All-New Discovery accessory guide covers the Versatile Roof Rack kits VPLRR0153 and VPLRR0192, with separate finishers and fixing kits. The page lists VPLRR0192 as superseding VPLRR0153. It does not cover every Discovery generation or every roof system. Confirm the vehicle generation, roof-rail state, exact part numbers, and current fitting instructions before ordering or installing.
Choose the correct roof-rail branch
The fitting guide first asks whether the vehicle already has roof rails:
- Without roof rails, it directs the installer through the no-rail preparation steps, then to the rack-support steps.
- With roof rails, it directs the installer through a different branch that removes the rail finishers, roof rails, and brackets before continuing.
These are materially different procedures. The with-rails branch includes bodywork and paint-protection steps. The guide warns that incorrect installation can be dangerous and says to contact an approved retailer if in doubt. It also marks lifting the rack onto its supports as a two-person step. This is not a simple crossbar clamp-on job; arrange an approved installer if the exact branch, parts, tools, or process are unfamiliar.

Keep the torque values with their named hardware
The guide specifies 32 Nm for the rack-support fixings and for the main rack fixings. If the optional crossbar is fitted, its bump stops use 3 Nm and its crossbar fixings use 11 Nm with the supplied torque tool. These values apply only to the named Discovery Versatile Roof Rack parts in this guide. Do not use them on a different rack, vehicle, fastener, or accessory.
The guide calls for torque checks after 60 km, 250 km, and 1,000 km. Follow those distances for this rack and retain the fitting instructions for later checks.
Check capacity and vehicle operation
The accessory guide states a 60 kg maximum load for the versatile rack and lists the rack itself at 25 kg. The vehicle’s own roof limit, gross vehicle weight, any optional crossbar or accessory rating, and local rules still apply. Use the lowest relevant limit and follow each source’s definition of what its value includes; do not treat the rack’s number as a vehicle-wide roof rating.
The optional crossbar restricts the roof opening panel to partial opening. If a load runs the full length of the rack, the guide says not to use the panel. It also says not to use an automated vehicle wash with the rack installed, not to use elastic straps, and to inspect load attachments regularly during a trip.

If the kit, roof-rail branch, load limit, or installation step cannot be confirmed for your Discovery, keep the vehicle unloaded and ask an approved Land Rover retailer to identify the correct setup.
