Installation, Load Limits & Safety

Verify glass-roof rack approval and installation for the exact vehicle, and keep US, Canadian, and UK load-security guidance within its stated scope.

Regional and Glass-Roof Safety Checks for Roof Carriers

A glass or panoramic roof does not have one universal rack rule. One vehicle may require a released or approved system; another may allow a rack only at marked mounting points; another may prohibit a particular roof or accessory combination. Check the current vehicle manual and the exact rack fitting instructions for the vehicle’s market, year, roof, and trim before buying or installing anything.

Confirm approval and roof operation

Do not infer rack approval from a roof’s appearance, another vehicle’s fit, or a general rack-brand statement. Confirm the exact mounting accessory, system, crossbars, and placement. Check whether the roof panel, sunroof, antenna, hatch, or nearby sensors can be used with the rack installed. If the documents do not clearly cover your configuration, stop and ask the vehicle or rack maker.

Tesla’s current North American Model Y manual requires a Tesla mounting accessory and a Tesla-approved roof-rack system. The Tesla installation procedure is specific to its rack and Model Y mounting points; it does not give a numeric roof-rack capacity or approve third-party racks. See the Model Y installation guide for that exact procedure.

Ford’s UK 2026 Capri manual is another model-specific boundary: it says to use only racks released by Ford on vehicles with a glass roof. The same manual lists 75 kg while moving and 300 kg while stationary. The stationary figure is not a driving limit, and neither the values nor the approval rule transfer to other Ford models or markets.

Protect the glass

When loading or unloading near a sunroof, avoid scratching the glass. Transport Canada warns that a scratch may develop into a crack and eventual breakage. If the glass is visibly damaged, the advisory says to speak with a dealership or glass-repair facility about whether action is needed. This is Canadian safety advice; it does not approve or reject a rack.

Keep cargo off the roof panel itself. The bars or approved platform, their mounts, and the accessory must carry the load at the locations the vehicle and product instructions specify.

Keep regional guidance separate

In the United States, NHTSA places responsibility on drivers to secure cargo and points to state-specific unsecured-load laws. Check the rules that apply to the place where you will drive; there is no single state-by-state substitute in this guide.

For cars in the United Kingdom, government load-security guidance says to stay within the manufacturer’s roof-rack limit and secure loads with ratchet straps or effective clamping. It says not to use rope, bungees, or similar cords as the main securing method. Its allowance for tying down the front of a long load is bounded to the guidance’s stated situation. Do not transfer this UK wording into a claim about US or Canadian law.

Recheck before a cross-border trip

Confirm the manual edition, units, approved components, accessory instructions, and local securement rules for each market on the route. Recalculate using the in-motion limit and the lowest applicable vehicle, rack, accessory, and cargo constraint. Roof loads can change handling, height, wind sensitivity, and energy use; use the exact vehicle guidance and adjust driving to the load and conditions.

If the rack’s approval, glass contact, roof-panel operation, or load limit cannot be confirmed for the exact vehicle, leave the rack off until the manufacturer or a qualified fitter resolves the question.
