Choosing a Roof Carrier for a SUP or Surfboard
Start with the boards you carry and the vehicle’s approved roof rack. A dedicated board carrier may make sense when its listed width and board count match your use; a multi-purpose water-sport rack may suit you when its instructions show a specific SUP mode. Neither the product name nor a width range confirms fit on a particular vehicle.
Compare the listed options
| Carrier example | What its US listing states | What still needs checking |
|---|---|---|
| Thule Board Shuttle | The current product page describes one or two boards and a telescoping loading width of 28–34 inches. Its padded straps are intended to protect boards from strap abrasion. | The exact vehicle and crossbar instructions, the board’s measured width and weight, the proposed one- or two-board arrangement, and the full roof load. |
| Thule SUP Taxi XT 810001 | The US page lists a 28–34 inch loading width and 55 lb capacity. It describes steel-reinforced webbing, a locking cam, and a telescoping fit. | The source does not state a board count. Check the current instructions for the exact vehicle and bars, then compare the board and complete system with every applicable limit. |
| Thule Compass 890 | The US page lists separate modes: one kayak in J-style or saddle mode, two kayaks in stacker mode, or up to two SUPs in saddle mode. | The listed modes do not establish a mixed kayak-and-SUP load. The source does not give a SUP width or weight maximum; check the current vehicle and product instructions. |
The examples are product-specific, not a ranking and not an approval for a roof setup. A carrier’s capacity does not increase a lower vehicle or crossbar limit. The multi-watercraft layout guide explains how to check roof space and avoid assuming that advertised counts fit every roof.

Measure the board and the roof system
Record the width and weight of each board you intend to carry. For a two-board setup, check the product’s stated board count and the instructions for how both boards are positioned and restrained. Do not infer that an unspecified board count means one board, two boards, or unlimited capacity. If the board is outside a product’s listed width range, treat that carrier as unverified until the manufacturer confirms the application.

Identify the vehicle’s market, year, trim or body, roof configuration, and installed crossbars. Confirm that the carrier’s attachment method matches the exact crossbar profile and dimensions, required spread, and any adapter path. Check the selected vehicle in the manufacturer’s current fit guide and follow the vehicle-specific installation instructions. Rails, crossbars, and a product page’s general fit language are not interchangeable fit results.
Check the complete load and restraint path
Use the vehicle, base-rack, and carrier instructions to determine which weights count toward each limit. Where the instructions require it, include the crossbars, feet, carrier, adapters, boards, and other roof cargo. The lowest applicable limit governs. Also check that the boards clear the roof, hatch, antenna, glass, doors, and nearby equipment, and that each board has the support and tie-down points shown for the selected product.
Locking straps and padded contact points are product features; they do not prove vehicle fit or replace the carrier’s installation and securement instructions. Use only the strap route and hardware specified for that model. If the exact board count, width, load, bar fit, or tie-down path is not established, pause and confirm it with the vehicle or carrier maker or a qualified fitter. The watercraft loading guide and pre-trip checklist provide broader checks.
These examples use US product pages and inch/pound specifications. Product details, units, available models, and part applications can differ in Canada and the UK; use the current page and instructions for the market where the system will be installed.
