Choose a roof or rear cargo system around your vehicle, rack, gear, access needs and load limits. Start with fit and the complete mounting path before comparing storage volume.
Cargo & Storage: Roof Boxes, Bags, Baskets and Cargo Carriers
Roof boxes, soft bags, open baskets and rear-mounted carriers solve different
storage problems. The right choice depends on the exact vehicle and mounting
system, the shape and weight of the gear, access to the hatch, weather
protection and how much extra height or length the vehicle can accommodate.
Start with the vehicle and mounting system
A product category or a box’s headline volume does not confirm that it fits
your vehicle. Identify the market, model year, trim and roof equipment first.
Then check the vehicle, rack and carrier instructions together. An installed
setup also needs enough crossbar spacing and hatch clearance, and its loaded
weight must remain within the applicable vehicle and component limits.
Use a roof solution only after confirming its approved mounting points and
driving-load limit. If an exact vehicle and product combination has not been
verified, keep the result conditional and follow the manufacturer’s fit guide
or ask a qualified installer to check the setup.
No crossbars does not mean every soft cargo bag fits. Check the exact bag manual, roof and door interface, airbag path, vehicle load and local rules before installing.
Subaru’s 2026 US brochure lists required crossbar paths and spoiler restrictions for its Thule cargo carriers. Use the details as a year-specific check, not as a complete installed fit approval.
Choose a box around the gear you carry, the vehicle’s hatch and bar geometry, and the remaining roof-load allowance. Headline volume alone cannot establish usable capacity or fit.
Check the driving roof limit, rack and carrier ratings before loading. Pack and secure cargo according to the exact manuals, then inspect the installation before and during the trip.
A roof box needs an approved rack or mounting system; factory side rails alone are not a universal box interface. Choose the Crosstrek-specific crossbar path before selecting a box.
Compare roof boxes, soft bags, open baskets and rear carriers by cargo, weather protection, loading height, vehicle access and mounting requirements. Fit and load limits come before convenience.
